Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends was the first of the Xtreme Legends expansion packs to be released. It was also the first Dynasty Warriors to have Musou Modes for the Other characters.

Several features that became DW staple were introduced in DW3:XL
- Musou Modes for Other characters (with the exception of Fu Xi and Nu Wa)
- A Very Hard difficulty level, which became the famous (or infamous) Chaos difficulty. A novice difficulty was also added.
- In the Very Hard difficulty, new 5th weapons can be obtained.
- New Items
- The default bodyguard system is completely rehauled, and the player has the ability to take another playable character into battle as a bodyguard who is capable of Double Musou Attacks
- 4 New Challenge Modes
- Combo rating system that rewards you with points for good combos.
- Only features introduced in DW3:XL are available standalone, all scenarios and characters from DW3 require you to import the DW3 data, every time you play DW3:XL.
