Gongsun Zan was a general who fought for the Han forces. He was supposedly a strict and noble general, but disrespected his officers. He and Liu Bei were old friends having studied together, and the latter served him for a time. After Gongsun Zan lost to Yuan Shao, he was too distressed to live and killed himself and his family. He is famed for his White Riders unit, which are five thousand elite soldiers on white steeds.

[edit] Dynasty Warriors
In both Dynasty Warriors 4 and Dynasty Warriors 5, Gongsun Zan participates as one of the commanders on the Allied Forces allied against Dong Zhuo. He serves at the Battle of Hu Lao Gate. In Dynasty Warriors 5, the Battle of Chang Shan was added, where Gongsun Zan fights against Yuan Shao. This is his last appearance in the game, as he dies in the battle, afterwhich Zhao Yun, one of his officers, leaves to fight with Liu Bei.
In Dynasty Warriors 6, Gongsun Zan appears early into Zhao Yun's Musou mode at the Battle of Hu Lao Gate, where Yun still is employed under Gongsun Zan. Gongsun Zan, with an angry and annoyed expression, confronts a grinning Yuan Shao and two of his officers, the leader of the Coalition against Dong Zhuo. Zhao Yun strides up to his master and puts his arm to Zan's chest, halting him from starting a fight. Gongsun warns Yuan Shao that his name will be the name that shines after the battle before leaving.
After Hu Lao Gate, Gongsun Zan and his cavalry stray off away from the capital, while Gongsun Zan remarks to Yuan Shao that his White Riders were the ones that shined on the battlefield. He also arrogantly tells Zhao Yun that Yun almost fought as well as Gongsun Zan, and that the country needs more men like himself. Zhao Yun turns back into the opposite direction to head for Liu Bei, turning his back to an curious Gongsun Zan.
