The Battle of Xiaoting (猇亭之戰), also known as the Battle of Yiling (夷陵之戰), is a battle fought by Shu in retaliation for the loss at Fan Castle. Young Lu Xun with the help of Ling Tong, Gan Ning, and Zhu Ran lead Wu to a decisive victory thanks to his genius fire attack. The decisive battle here halted Liu Bei's invasion of Wu and eventually led to his death.

The Battle of Yi Ling was portrayed as one of the most emotional battles in the Dynasty Warriors series for many reasons. First off, Liu Bei used it as his attempt for vengeance for the death of his sworn brother, Guan Yu at Fan Castle. In Dynasty Warriors 5 a scene appears prior to the battle, showing a messenger reporting Guan Yu's death to Liu Bei. Enraged, Liu Bei orders his men to march on Wu. Zhuge Liang steps in and begs Liu Bei to call the invasion off, but Liu Bei's mind was set, and the invasion took place. In some games, Zhuge Liang expresses through dialogue that, although his lord did not listen to him, he must do whatever he can to help him. In most games, the battle usually starts with a raging stand from Zhang Fei or Liu Bei, continuing to symbolize their anger from Guan Yu's death.

The battle also is emotional for Sun Shang Xiang of Wu. In most games, she is forced to fight Liu Bei, leading up to her ending in Dynasty Warriors 5, in which she is holding a near dead Liu Bei in her arms on the battle field, weeping over him. In Dynasty Warriors 6, Shang Xiang's role flips, and she fights Wu at Yi Ling, ending the battle with Liu Bei allowing Sun Quan to live.

In all games, the battle results with Wu using a fire attack against Shu, although it is preventable in some games. Depending on what installment and what force you are fighting, this can happen soon after the start of the battle, or minutes into the battle. In some games, Wu brings out reinforcements after the attack. After the fire attack, the Shu forces retreat back, normally to Stone Sentinel Maze in which your map will disappear if you enter it. Normally, Zhuge Liang appears when the Shu forces reach the center.
